“Minus Forty” was written after waiting at a bus stop in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for nearly an hour during -40 Celsius temperatures. My feet were completely frozen, my beard was all icicles, and the bus I needed to take to the university simply never arrived. I was angry, exhausted, and felt stupid for waiting so long. After giving up and returning home, I picked up my acoustic guitar and wrote a song about the extreme harshness of Canadian winters.
lyrics
It’s something that no one will notice again,
Yet when I lay my head to rest I think of nothing less.
I’m tired and lazy as motherf*cking sh*t,
Where is my ticket to that nice spaceship?
My feet are freezing and I like poutine,
But that doesn’t mean I wanna stay on the scene,
My bus is forty minutes late,
And my legs are feeling numb,
And my brain is feeling dumb,
Why is it minus f*cking forty?
Why is it minus forty?
I know that I’m Canadian, it’s just exhausting.
Where’s the warmth in my veins?
It’s something that no one will notice again,
These caffeinated moments in this life we spend,
The darkness and the light and all the bullshit in between,
It’s unrelenting,
It’s unrelenting.
It’s minus f*cking forty.
